Large Scale Studio Ink Drawings
Philip Sugden, Artist Large Scale Studio Ink Drawings Ink, gouache, Mexican bark paper
Virtual Enlightment
2015
Ink, gouache, Mexican bark paper
78" x 48"
$8500

This work hangs as a tapestry. There is a hand-inked QR code that will take the viewer, using a smart phone, to a 2-minute video that takes the viewer into the doorway and shares its secret. The background in the drawing is real bark texture and binary code of the names of God that begin with the letter, "A." The image shows a holy man looking for enlightenment on his iPad and his student who is texting and wearing a T-shirt that reads, "I'm a Beleiber." The temple is a real structure in the village of Bhakitpur in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal and is based on my own location drawings during 12 visits there.

Gate: n. 1. an opening for passage
Sepia Ink on 65 Sheets of handmade Himlayan Paper
144" x 84"
$6500

This work is one of the most successful inks I've ever done. It explores, more closely, the breaking down of the dichotomy between being the viewer and the thing being viewed -- projecting our own meaning onto the form and realizing that we are actually projecting ourselves. The "Gate" is the realization of that projection.
